Type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension.

Tempered glass is made by processes which create internal stresses which give the glass strength. It will usually shatter into small fragments instead of sharp pieces when broken, making it less likely to cause severe injury.
